3 Reasons Why Diversifying Your Social Media Presence is Vital for Small Business Marketing Success

13 May 2023

Are you focusing all your marketing efforts on just one social media platform?

You may think Instagram is best since sliced bread, or you’re hooked on TikTok dances. I’m here to tell you it’s time to snap out of it and diversify your social media game!

Why, you ask?

Your target audience might not even be on the platform you’re obsessing over. Sure, it might be fun to post pictures of your products on Instagram, but if your target audience is mostly middle-aged men who prefer LinkedIn, you’re missing out on a whole group of potential customers. It’s essential to research and determine where your target audience is spending their time online.

Think about your eggs and a basket!

Even if your target audience is on the platform you’re focusing on, it’s still not wise to put all your marketing eggs in one basket. Social media platforms are constantly evolving, and what’s popular today might not be tomorrow.

Remember My Space? Exactly. If you rely solely on one platform and it suddenly goes out of fashion or becomes less popular, you could be in trouble.

Each platform has its own unique features and benefits.

Instagram might be great for showcasing your products with visually stunning photos, but Twitter is excellent for real-time customer engagement and responding to inquiries. LinkedIn is perfect for professional networking and B2B marketing, while TikTok is all about being creative and having fun. By diversifying your social media presence, you can use each platform’s strengths and reach a wider audience.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. “But Siobhan, I don’t have the time or resources to manage multiple social media accounts!”

And I get it – running a business is already a full-time job. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to be on every platform under the sun. Focus on two or three that make the most sense for your business and target audience. That way, you can create quality content and engage with your followers without spreading yourself too thin.

Diversifying your social media presence can make your marketing efforts more effective.

When you’re on multiple platforms, you can cross-promote your content and drive traffic to your website or other social media accounts. You can also repurpose your content for different platforms, giving your followers a fresh perspective on your business.

So there you have it. If you want to take your business to the next level, it’s time to branch out and diversify your social media presence. Remember to research, focus on a few key platforms, and take advantage of each platform’s unique features.

Who knows, you might even discover a new favourite social media platform along the way!

Meet Siobhan

I have worked in marketing for over 20 years and have been a freelance consultant for almost 15 years. I have a BA in Media, Graduate Certificate in Business, Certificate in Digital Marketing, and I am a Certified Marketer with the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI).

I launched my first marketing agency long before the onset of digital marketing. Facebook was only for personal use, and internet was painfully slow.

Some things that haven’t changed with marketing:

  • Establishing your marketing foundations and research how your business needs to be marketed.
  • Consistency across all customer touchpoints.
  • A holistic marketing strategy that focuses on supporting your sales pipeline!

Although marketing is my first love, coffee definitely comes a close second.
